My Day at the Olympic Park: Part 2

Picking up straight where I left off, we left the Riverbank Arena slightly before the end of the football to make it to the Basketball Arena in time for the evening session of the wheelchair basketball. I've always perceived Wheelchair Basketball to be one of the signature Paralympic Sports so I really wanted to see it! I was also determined to see an event in which Canada were competing as I'd seen my other two teams! (Team GB and Team Canada).

Feeling Patriotic on my way to the Basketball Arena
My whole family was so so excited for the Basketball! We arrived at the arena to thumping music, chants from the crowd and even a kiss-cam! The game we were set to see was Canada v Australia. There were definitely more people cheering for Australia and as I know many more people from Canada I was rooting for the underdog!

We arrived as the players were warming up and already I was in awe of their strength and commitment.   The athletes were so so agile and the wheelchairs obviously assisted in their manoeuvrability but I was in awe of the way they prepared for the game! Much to my despair many of the athletes were taller than me and they were sitting down. #5ft5Problems!! The rest I need to explain with pictures,

The national anthems played and I was struck by how the Australians took hold of each other and supported each other throughout. It really humbled me and it was incredible to see. As the team line ups were announced, it was shared with the audience that one of the Canadian athletes was on her 6th Paralympic Games! That means she's been in the games for 24 years!! I was in total awe.

Another moment which was one of my absolute favourites was that the Canadian athletes that weren't on the court and on the bench were acting as cheerleaders!! Despite all the noise from the 12,000 people packed into the arena, you could distinctly hear the Canadian substitutes above everyone else. It was something else. Honestly it was indescribable.

After the games, we walked back to the Station and I took a little detour into Forever 21!! You can see a video of all my Olympic Antics and my F21 haul below!

My day at the Olympic Park is something that I will never ever forget. The passion and pride that I Felt is something I'm unsure if I will ever experience again. I'm humbled and overwhelmed and excited all at the same time and it's an experience that I wish I could repeat over and over again! The only thing that could have improved the entire day would have been if you, my beautiful Tone It Up team could have been with me!

My Day at the Olympic Park - Part 1

So you will all know, if you saw my Olympic Team TIU Challenge that I was absolutely in love with and caught up in the Olympic Movement during and following the London 2012 Olympic Games. I was devastated that I didn't get to go to any events and listened with envy when my parents told me about their experiences at the rowing on 'Super Saturday' at Eton Dorney. As a family we've tried and tried to get hold of some Paralympic tickets but they are like gold dust! There are absolutely none available!

So imagine my surprise when my mum burst into my room at 10am on Saturday to tell me that she'd been given 4 Olympic Park Day Passes in recognition of her performance at work; thankfully the company she works for are one of the Olympic and Paralympic major sponsors. I couldn't believe it! I was so excited but then my next thought went to work - I was scheduled to do a 9-2 shift on Saturday and it was such short notice I thought there was no way I'd be able to take it off. Thanks to some miracle and some expert negotiation I was able to take a days holiday and we were off! The Edwards family were going to Olympic Park.

My Sister and I on the train (The Overground Underground!)
First off, let me start by saying whoever had doubts about the London Transport System during the games, obviously never used the London transport system during the games! Both of our journeys to and from the park were faultless, quick and easy! The trains were clean, frequent and took you straight to the doors of the park.

As we stepped out of the station and my family ushered me past Forever 21 (more on that later - promise!) it was about a 5 minute walk to the security checks - think airport security but outdoors. We were met with smiles from the games makers (the volunteers), smiles from soldiers (who were handling a lot of the security) and pounding music to set the atmosphere (Rihanna's We Found Love had ALL of the soldiers dancing!) We cleared security in 30 seconds. No lie - it was amazing how quickly we got through!

Then there it was! We turned a corner and could see the poster image of the games; the Athletics Stadium. It was HUGE! We could hear roars coming from the crowd inside and you could feel your heart beating. This was what all the fuss has been about.

My parents and I in front of the Athletics Stadium
We knew that our tickets had restrictions; we couldn't see any of the events at the Athletics Stadium, the Velodrome or the Aquatics Centre but that left a lot of stuff we could do! I kept comparing the Olympic Park to Disneyland! There was tonnes going on and things to see everywhere you looked! I'll mention the Games Makers again because everything you have heard about them is true. They were friendly, approachable, extremely knowledgable and they were all having a fantastic time!

We headed to the Copperbox arena first which is aptly named because it really is a box made out of copper! Here we saw Goalball, I'd never heard of Goalball before so wasn't sure what to expect but we got in at just the right time to see Brazil and Lithuania start a game. The noise within the arena was incredible but as soon as play began and for as long as the ball was in session the audience fell silent.

Goalball is a sport for the visually impaired. Players can have varying degrees of impairment but to level the playing field, all competitors wear blindfolds. The aim of the game is very similar to handball; you score by getting the ball in the goal which stretches the width of the court. There are three players per team and each half lasts 12 minutes. The ball is heavy and has a bell in it so the athletes can hear where it is as they, obviously, cannot see it. This is why the audience had to be silent until a goal was scored when we could, and did, go wild!

Goalball in the Copperbox Arena
I was blown away by the Athlete's skill and teamwork. They couldn't see a thing but were on target every single time they took a shot. I was really struck by what the Paralympics promote; sport for all. Sport really does know no bounds and I was made extremely aware of this watching Goalball. It's not a well known sport; the arena wasn't very full but I was so engaged in the game! Brazil won and I was 100% blown away and inspired by their performance. It was incredible to witness the silence and the concentration shown by the athletes.

We then moved on to the Riverbank arena to watch the 7-a-side football (soccer). Team GB were due to play during the session so it was a really popular event. The rules are extremely similar to able-bodied soccer except for each team has 7 players, each with varying classifications of Cerabal Palsy, there is no offside rule and players must remain at least 7m away from a player taking a free kick or penalty. The first game was between Ukraine and the USA and I'm afraid to say the USA got absolutely destroyed! Ukraine scored in the first minute and that set the tone of the game which eventually finished 9-0 to Ukraine.

Team USA and Ukraine warming up (we got there early!)
The next game was between Team GB and Brazil. The stadium was packed and mexican waves went around for 20 minutes! We were really excited to see Team GB perform. The atmosphere was amazing! Every time the commentator said the words 'Great Britain' the noise produced as a result was deafening! I couldn't help but feel extremely proud as the National Anthem was played before the game began. Unfortunately things went extremely downhill from there as Brazil went three up before half time and the atmosphere dwindled to nothing. Needless to say, it was incredible to see Team GB perform.

I'll leave it here for part 1 as I'm aware of how long this post is becoming! Part 2 coming soon!!

This challenge will take you through day 9 and day 10 as tomorrow is your first rest day athletes!

I travel to Spain tomorrow, and just as thousands of athletes have travelled to London, I want you to tell me how you stay fit, healthy and active when you're away from home.

Do you go to the gym in your hotel? What do you pack to ensure you stay on track?

Let me know!

It's We Love Food Friday! Today's challenge is 100% related to that theme!

Did you know that when training for the Beijing Olympics, Michael Phelps consumed a phenomenal 16,000 calories a day? He deserves a gold medal just for that!

It's rumoured that Usain Bolt eats 12 McDonald's McNuggets before running a race? Crazy right? British swimmer Rebecca Adlington says she eats "just as a normal person would, just lots more of it!" This proves it's definitely not easy being an elite athlete.

In spirit of this, today I want you to journal your nutrition and take pictures of your meals! (I love collages ;) Feel free to send them to me, or if not just tag me on Twitter so I can see them!

Happy Friday Athletes!

P.S; my dear friend and Tone it Up momma Janice Mitchell has just launched her business: Simply Beachy Boutique. Please check it out! I for one loveeee the Simply Natural Popcorn bracelet!

Day 6 already! Wow! I'm really loving the Olympics so far, and I'm so pleased for Team GB! The last two days have somewhat been a 'gold rush' for us! We've gone from 21st in the medal table to 5th!

Today, I am encouraging you all to be thoughtful. Hence today's challenge being called; Thoughtful Thursday. Today's challenge is to email/tweet/Facebook me (you know the drill!) a quote or phrase or song that gets you going and picks you up when you need it most.

For me, Glee's version of Perfect by Pink always makes me feel empowered. What about you?

I'll feature some in the blog soon! Feel free to send me a picture too.

Love and hugs

Olympic Team TIU Challenge Day 5 and Winners!

Hello athletes! First off I'd like to offer my congratulations to Team GB's Men's team Artistic Gymnastic squad for their bronze medal yesterday! It was our first medal in Gymnastics in 100 years! Definitely worth celebrating. Silver was cruely and bitterly taken from us but us British do not let anything get us down!

Team GB Gymnasts - good looking bunch of boys!

I'd also like to congratulate two swimmers; Missy Franklin from Team USA and Ruta Meilutyte from Lithuania who both achieved something remarkable yesterday!! Missy won gold in the 100m womens backstroke final, just 15 minutes after competing in another heat! Ruta is just 15 years old and won the first ever gold for her country in the pool during the 100m Womens Breast Stroke final. Both athletes are truly inspiring and I loved watching their events.

Missy Frankling and Ruta Meilutyte with their Golds
Now on to our winners! I was gratefully reminded that I forgot to announce the winners from Sunday's challenge! I wrote yesterday's post in such a hurry that I totally forgot!! Without any further ado, Sunday's Running Medals go to;

Bronze; Jen! (@SummerGrl375) I loved the enthusiasm in your tweets! Congrats!!
Silver; Sophie! (@SophieHowl27) Your video was great!! I love that you continue to challenge and inspire others
Gold; Jennifer (@jenn_toland) You are so inspiring! I love that despite the crappy day you had you still went out and knocked down 5k!! Make sure to email me your address so I can send you your prize :)

Now for yesterday's Motivational Music prize - the only medal (which is gold - of course!) goes to Gabriela Mina! I loved your reasons for your music choices and I totally agree with so many of your song choices!! Particularly LMFAO!! That one always gets me going! Make sure you email me your postal address!! <3

Challenge 5!
We're back to training, athletes!! The athletics is drawing ever closer!
Following Team GB's historic Gymnastics win, I want you guys to hit the GYM (get it haha - I'm sorry - you can blame my mum!) and get in a 90 minute workout; 60 minutes of cardio (with at least 15 minutes of HIIT) and 30 minutes of toning.

You can do split sessions!
Check the machines at your gym because a lot already have pre-programmed HIIT workouts.

If not here are some of my favourites;

Treadmill: Intense Speed or Incline for 1 minute
Recovery Speed or Incline for 2 minutes

Elliptical: Intense Resistance as fast as you can go for 2 minutes
Recovery for 3 minutes

Stairmill: 30 seconds at level 1 resistance, 30 seconds off; increase the level each time!

Rowing Machine: Fastest 500m you can manage! Rest for 30 seconds and go again!

Bike: Varying resistance; 20 seconds intense, 40 seconds recovery

For your toning workouts, go to ToneItUp.tv or I also like Blogilates :)
I will leave you with these two videos - I saw them and I love them!! Great job from both Team USA and Team GB - and you also get to see Tom Daley's abs! What more could you want? :)

Team USA; Michael Phelps or Ryan Lochte can call me maybe ;)

Team GB: Tom Daley is definitely sexy and I don't care who know's it!!

Day 3! Let me know how you got on yesterday with your events - win any medals? How did you do?

We have no scheduled events today, athletes. But by no means is it a rest day!! This is the Olympics ladies!

Challenge 3
The track and field events don't start until the weekend but we are Olympians! We must prepare! Today is a training day. We need to work on our speed in order to secure gold against the out-of-this-world Usain Bolt. Your challenge today is to run any distance you like; whichever is your discipline (even if it's only the 100m!) as fast as you can without injury.

Then you need to check in with me on Facebook, Twitter or via Email and let me know your distance and your time. Make sure to use #OlympicTeamTIU on Twitter :)

Who knows? Medals may be awarded!

Good Luck Athletes!

Olympic Team TIU Challenge. Day 2: Winners and Challenge 2!

It's day 2!! Did you enjoy the opening ceremony? I did!! Apologies in advance for the quality of the post it's being written on the iPad! I loveeed the opening ceremony! The lighting if the cauldron was by far the highlight for me. It's been kept a massive secret who will light it and there was much speculation. I couldn't think of a better way to do it than by using the athletes of tomorrow. the cauldron itself is a thing of beauty with one flame being lit for each country that is competing. I got quite emotional!!

Without further ado let's get on to yesterday's winners! The challenge was to show me your Opening Ceremony outfit and why it was important to you. I found it so hard to choose and this was just the first challenge!! I'm such a softie! In third place, and thereby winning the Bronze medal for challenge one, we have Megan (@Bentozen) who looked positively patriotic in red, white and blue! Great job Megan, I loveeeee your accessories!

In second place winning the silver medal is awarded to Leigh (@LeighTonesItUp). Leigh posted this with a caption reading "I've never felt more confident than I did when I wore this dress" which suitably won Leigh second place!

Finally, winning the first Gold of the Olympic Team TIU Challenge is Kyle (@KyleTonesItUp)! Kyle emailed me her entry and I was touched by the thought that had gone into it. Alongside her picture, Kyle wrote;

"Here's my outfit. The reason I would wear it for the opening ceremony is that it makes me feel beautiful and powerful. The shoes are TOMS, and the height from the wedges makes my legs look great :). The dress is easy and pretty and flattering. The blazer is my favorite. I got it in London, where I lived alone for 4 months. The whole outfit reminds me of how capable and brave I am, it's such a confidence booster. Just like an Olympian!"

Congratulations Kyle! DM/Email me your postal address to recieve your prize!

Challenge Two
It's day one of the Olympic Games and there are opportunities to win medals in three events; swimming, cyling and weightlifting. The challenge is to do any of the three today!

Swimming
Get in the pool for a HIIT workout! Swim two lengths at full power front crawl and recover at a slow to medium pace - you can do it! You're an Olympian! Compete for thirty minutes at least.

Cycling
Either at the gym or on a road bike. (Don't worry I wont make you cycle 250km as they have on the Road Race today!) If you're at the gym, cycle for 1 minute 30 at 100rpm before knocking it back to 60rpm for 1 minute. Carry on like this for 30 minutes! If you're on the road, push yourself and cycle further than you ever have!

Weightlifting
Complete at least three Tone It Up workouts of your choice. Either from your Beach Babe DVD or from the Tone It Up YouTube Channel!

Your challenge is to check in with me and let you know what you did and what you achieved! True Olympian style! Good luck athletes!

It's the Olympics!!
I absolutely love the Olympics and I am so so proud that the Olympic Games are in my country this year. I remember the moment 7 years ago when I found out that London were hosting the games and I've been excited ever since!

To celebrate, I am hosting the Olympic Team TIU Challenge here on my blog! With each new Olympic Day there will be a new Olympic Theme Challenge! Want to be involved? Stay tuned to Diary of an Aspiring Beach Babe for the duration of the games - there will be prizes!!!

If you partake in the challenge use the Hashtag #OlympicTeamTIU so everyone can see your tweets!

Challenge Number One!
It's Opening Ceremony night!! It's time for the procession around the brand new Olympic Park. It's a somewhat easy night for the athletes. Email/Tweet/Facebook me (all details above on the blog header) a picture of your opening ceremony outfit. You need to let me know why you have chosen it for your Procession Apparel. It doesn't have to be a new picture!

There will be Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards.

What are you waiting for!

Enjoy the Opening Ceremony Athletes!

My Opening Ceremony Outfit. I've chosen this because the pink stands out and is bold - a reminder to be bold myself.  I also chose the stripes to represent all of the different stages in my journey! What about you?
