Tone It Up Tuesday: 5K!!!!!!!

35 Minute 5k Run :) (Taking off my 5 min warm up walk)

So yesterday I did it! I ran my first ever 5k! If you'd of asked me on Monday morning what I was going to do that day, never would I have said run 5k. It was completely unprecedented!

I knew I wanted to go for a run as I hadn't been out since my return from my holiday, so I got out of bed and for my booty call set off to my local park. I started running and I looked down at my 'Runtastic' app and it said I had already done nearly 3k and it had felt like nothing so I thought 'You know what? Today I'm going to run 5k' and I did! And looking at that image now it was nearly 6k! Me! I want to go down to my old school and show any and all of the PE teachers that ever wrote me off as being unfit. I, Georgia, ran 5k yesterday and it's started a whole new wave of motivation - I've got my eye on a 10k race I'm considering entering in November!

So what would be my tips? The first, it may be an obvious one but, don't expect to start from 0 and reach your goal. IE, if you're like me and weren't very fit not that long ago don't expect to run 5k on your first try; build up your stamina. Apps are a fantastic idea, I think I just chose a rubbish one; I've heard Couch to 5k is fantastic. I didn't finish the 8 week program set out for me in my app and I was still able to do it - and comfortably too - so don't give up hope.
Secondly, like anything, you need to make sure that you're comfortable. Wear running shoes that secure your feet and that you've never really had any issues with, wear clothes that you're not going to be tugging at or pulling up, more importantly clothes that you're not going to overheat in.
Thirdly; keep hydrated! It is so important to drink a lot of water whilst working out! Sweat is water so if you think of how much water your body loses during a workout you'll realise how important it is to stay hydrated. My tip would be drink a bottle (75cl) of water before setting off on your run; I promise you won't regret it.
Fourthly; MUSIC! Compile a playlist (see yesterday's blog post for ideas) that is going to keep you going. The best workout playlist is one that will make you not realise how long you've been going; ie a distraction. Songs that are high tempo, energetic, some of your old favorites, a particular album; all of these will help you achieve your goal.
Finally; find a 5k buddy! I know it would have helped me to stay on track! It doesn't have to be someone you can meet up and run with; I know I'd find that off-putting! But finding someone on the TIU Community, or on Twitter who has the same goal as you who you can check in with, set workouts with and a target date - it'll keep you accountable and you'll be more likely to reach your goals! (Check out my blog post on being a SMART SWOT for more goal setting tips)

So there were my top 5 tips that helped me and if I think of any more I'll be sure to let you know!
To finish, there's nothing else really for me to say other than thank you. The support and love I've had from my TIU family these last few days has been so overwhelming - it actually moved me to tears this morning. It's because of you guys; yes YOU reading this post, that I find the motivation I need every day to get going, to work out, to eat right. It's because of you that I finished those last 2 kilometers; I just kept saying to myself; 'I can't wait to tell the team!' Being held accountable is such a massive motivator for me and being told I'm an inspiration, that I'm beautiful - things I haven't believed in my life ever - fill me with pride and gratitude beyond belief. So thank you SO MUCH to absolutely everyone who's ever read my blog, ever tweeted me or ever helped me in any way shape or form on my journey.

I know I have SO much more to give, yesterday was just the beginning and I can't wait to share more of my journey with you.

Share, Love, Inspire, Sweat <3
