Body Image *Beware of Expletive Language*

Ok, so I think you guys know me pretty well by now, and I think it's fair to say that I'm a positive person. I'm definitely more of a glass half full kinda gal! So I'm going to share with you today an experience from yesterday that honestly shocked me to the core and a situation that I think needs some of my light sprinkled on it!

So here goes. On Thursdays, when I finish college at 4.20, I have to get a bus to work to start at 5. (I rarely get there on time but that's a different story!) So there I was waiting for the bus along with around 100 students - it gets SO busy at the end of the day! I was standing just in front of a group of five or six guys who I think were first years, which makes them a year younger than me so probably not more than 16 years old. On the other side of the road to where we were standing is the bus stop which goes in the opposite direction. Our bus stop was on the same side of the road as college. A girl emerged out of college to go to the other bus stop the guys' behind me had this conversation ; If you don't want to read expletive language please skip ahead to the next purple section!

"Fucking hell, look at her legs!"
"Ah man that's fucking disgusting"
"She's huge! LOOK! They're the same size as her ass look!"
"Fucking hell, what a fucking heffa, that's fucking wrong"
"They're the same size!!!.....Fuck me, how the hell does she get out of bed in the morning?"

I won't go on because I don't want to upset anyone but I was shocked and disgusted at how these 16 year old BOYS were talking about this girl who they've never met. It really hit home because that's how people used to talk about me. Except I was 'thunder thighs'. I will never forget how I felt when I walked up to some 'friends' and hearing them talk about me like that, so for these guys to talk about her like that made my heart sink, and it sunk even more when I realised men speak about women in this way ALL of the time.

What gives men the right to call us fat? What gives men the right to make judgements on our appearance? Because talking about a woman like that will make her feel like she's fat when the truth is she's probably not at all, she just doesn't look like a Playboy model. Talking about women like this can lead to body dysmorphia, anorexia and bulimia - trust me. I've been there!

It's not OK to talk about anyone this way! Not just women! Especially not a 16 year old girl you have never spoken to EVER!

I feel so strongly about this issue! It's not right and it has to stop! As I've mentioned before, I have SO much admiration for anyone who feels comfortable with their body. For people to take this confidence away is totally 100% unacceptable.

Take it from an ex-bulimic. This is wrong. It HAS to stop! Please spread the word by sharing this post with others so we can, as a TIU team, take a stand and put an end to this wrong-doing!
