The Importance of Switching Up Your Routine and 'Try It Week'

Have you heard of Fit Food Junkie? You're missing out if you haven't! Sharisse Dalby is a good friend of mine and recently when I'd had a particularly bad morning on the scale (oh hello period!) she gave me the best advice of switching up my routine, not only did it help me shift a few of the pounds I'd put on it also gave me a renewed energy and spirit when it came to my workouts.

When it comes to weight training, if you lift the same weight every day for the same amount of repetitions your body will become used to it so progression will cease. In order to get results, as strange as it sounds, you have to damage/break your muscles in order for them to repair in all their toned glory. If your muscles don't come under strain and the workout becomes more of 'something to do' than a challenge then something's not right! Try adding an extra pound on each set, add 5 reps. See how you feel and adjust accordingly! Strive for progression.

With cardio it's kind of the same principle. If you run for 20 minutes and cover the same amount of distance, to start with there will be some progression but after a while it will begin to slow down and you'll enter a maintenance phase rather than advancing. What do I suggest? Gradually increase the pace or intensity. If you're on a treadmill do your last 5 minutes a kilometre faster or add an incline for a little. If you're hitting the street at some sprint intervals! Not only will you find the workout more of challenge, you won't be as bored!

In spirit of this new information I'm hereby calling this week 'Try-It' week. I'm striving to try something new every day (including the weekend) this week. Included in this must be at least 3 new classes at the gym - starting tomorrow with Boxercise (shown below).

Today (Monday) I tried a new machine at the gym - the mountain climber; I was pleasantly surprised! It is kind of new as I tried it once for about 30 seconds when I first joined and hated it as it was so hard but it shows how far my body and strength has come as I found it just the right amount of challenging!

Do you want to join it with Try-It week with me? Let me know on Facebook and Twitter what you get up to!

Remember, change is uncomforable and you gotta work for the body you've always dreamed of!
