Fitness | Waist Trainer Debate

For months I have been shocked to see the Kardashian's promoting these corset-style 'Waist Trainers' on their Instagram pages. Of course, like anything the Kardashian's promote, the Waist Trainer epidemic has grown massively. Personally, the idea infuriates me. Who remembers the scene in Pirates of the Caribbean where Keira Knightley faints because of her corset? The Waist Trainer is exactly the same idea.

Given that the majority of Kardashian fans are younger women or teenage girls, I'm shocked to see the Kim, Khloe and Kourtney all endorse this product (see above). Kourtney has just given birth, Kim has an incredible figure but I am most disappointed in Khloe. Khloe is my favourite Kardashian anyway but having seen her incredible weight-loss transformation from working out hard and eating right, I can't believe she's now choosing to belittle those achievements by promoting the Waist Trainer.

Waist Gang Society, the brand the girls (and others) have associated themselves to clearly states on its website that wearing a waist trainer corset promotes smaller, more frequent meals due to the restrictive nature of the product. This is terrifying! Words like "constriction", "discipline", "compression" and "tight" are all over the website. This is NOT a healthy way to reduce your waist line. Restricting your muscles, bones, and organs like that will not benefit your health at all. I'm shocked and angered that the Kardashian's push this on their younger fan base. Its only saving grace is that this particular brand's high price point will make it inaccessible to the younger audience. Unfortunately there are others on the market for as low as $25.

Devin Brugman, co-founder of one of my favourite brands, A Bikini A Day, tweeted last week that this latest fitness phenomenon saddens her and I'm really not surprised. I absolutely stand with her. I love A Bikini A Day for promoting a positive body image, encouraging women to embrace their curves as well as showing the world that curves are gorgeous. Check out the picture of Devin below, her waistline looks perfect to me!

If you're thinking about trying the Waist Trainer or a similar product, please don't! Click here for some of my favourite ab workouts which will whittle your waist line the right way! Exercise and a clean diet is just as easy as wearing something that's going to compress your organs all day!

The Waist Trainer would not be the first controversial product the Kardashian's have been ill-advised to put their names to. Remember Quik-Trim? The diet pill that the family promoted had never been scientifically researched yet it flew off of the shelves. I remember I was tempted as a young teenage girl to use it because Kim did and the only reason I didn't was because it wasn't available in the UK! The thought of using a dietary product that had never been researched now frightens me.

What do you think? Do you think the Kardashian's are irresponsible for promoting the Waist Trainer? Would you try it? Let me know!

  1. I agree whole-heartedly with your post! It's very sad when someone in the spotlight has the unique opportunity to positively influence young women and girls--yet they choose to endorse products and ideals that are self-serving, most likely for monetary purposes. Oh well, they can't all be like Karena + Katrina! ; ) Hugs from Florida, Ash xo
