FITNESS | How Much is Too Much?

Remember about four months ago when there was research that said running for too long too often did more bad to you than good? Remember a month after when it was announced that it might not be as bad as was thought? I've just watched a segment on the Today show that informed me that treadmills are the least safe piece of gym equipment and there are better alternatives. What should we believe? It seems as though every day there's a new piece of research claiming something that we think is good for us, isn't as good as we thought.

My take on it is that there is always going to be new research. There's always going be something wrong with everything we do. Somebody in some lab will always have something to say about it.
That being said, it's clearly difficult to work out what to believe and also what information to pay close attention to.

My advice on this point is; listen to your body. If you're in pain from using a certain machine in the gym, and I don't mean the I-Can't-Do-This pain, I mean actual physical pain that feels like an injury then stop. Don't do it. As good as that run may feel, if you're going to get hurt then it stops being safe and it stops being worth it.

Seek the advice of professionals. If you're a member of a gym, make use of the inductions they offer! Ask the instructors for help if you're not sure on anything - it's what they're there for. Don't be afraid to reach out to them, in my experience they will always appreciate and respect your questions. If you're not a member of a gym or health club, research online to find accredited personal trainers or nutritionist, whatever advice you're after, and ask for help there!

As always, be careful! Work your way up to a heavier weight, don't dive straight in. Be sensible and know your own limits. Push them, but not to the point of stupidity. Know what works for YOU. Unless you're extremely lucky, most pieces of research are not going to be geared to you personally; so they may not wholly apply. Know your own body, respect your boundaries and continue to work hard.

I hope this has helped to debunk some of the information out there!

Love Always,
